back in the day, whenever i got requests for that, i would just write other time travel ficlets. 

so like here’s genin team 7 + blank period sakura.

“sakura-chan looks sad.”

the woman before them tries to smile even though it’s pointless. “always so observant,” she teases, making naruto pout. “naruto, i’ve been separated from my husband through time and space.” her hand falls onto her midsection. “and i’m in a bit of a precarious situation.”

she’s been very tight-lipped about the circumstances that led up to this — both how this grown up version of haruno sakura appeared in their world and just how she apparently ended up married and pregnant. she’d given kakashi enough details to confirm her identity and gain his trust, so he’s currently speaking to the hokage while the three of them babysit her.

it’s not that sasuke doesn’t believe that she is who she says she is. technically, she didn’t even claim to be haruno sakura. but her features are fairly distinct and there’s just something about the way she carries herself around their team, relaxed and all too trusting.

“you have nothing to fear,” sakura tells the woman. “we won’t let anything happen to you.”

“yeah!” naruto agrees. he’s positively beaming. “i’d never let anything happen to future wife.”

the woman smiles fondly, and sasuke feels a strange sense of dread just as naruto grows elated.

sasuke’s had a fairly transient lifestyle for so long and sakura’s been the same for the past handful of years. they’re used to sleeping under the stars, by burning embers with the sounds of nature lulling them to sleep. when they purchased their house, they decided on one with a large yard and spacious engawa. sure, konoha had plenty of green space for them to indulge in, but having their own just feels more special.

a house wasn’t something either of them saw happening so soon, but neither was a baby, so here they are now.

sakura hangs the laundry, enjoying the warm breeze. summer is coming and it’s going to get unbearable to be outside pretty soon. she clips the sheets and the shirts and then the many, many freshly washed towels their daughter loves to spit up on.

sometimes sarada is a fussy thing, but she’s theirs and she’s lovely, sitting quietly on sasuke’s lap as they both watch sakura hang everything.

“you know you can help, right?”

sasuke has the grace to look down at their daughter, perplexed. “i don’t think you can even hold your head up,” he tells her, “and yet mama wants you to hang laundry.”

the first few drops make sakura frown. she’s confused more than she’s annoyed because the sun is still out and so the shower is unexpected. the rain hits her cheek, looking frighteningly akin to a tear. her bottom lip juts out as she swipes at the water on her face. when she notices him staring, she grins.

it’s a small smile, more a twitch of her lips than an obvious show of joy. still, her eyes crinkle, softening in their regard for him. she looks amused as she warms his brittle heart as always.

“what?” she asks.

he doesn’t know what to say. he doesn’t really have anything to say, he tries to tell himself, but that’s not true at all. they’re at the end of the mission that took sakura out of konoha and briefly to sasuke’s side. tomorrow she will be on her way back to the hokage to report their findings and tomorrow sasuke will be alone again.
